Прозаик и драматург. Его первые романы посвящены проблемам вступления подростка во взрослую жизнь: "Пенрод" ["Penrod"] (1914) и "Семнадцать" ["Seventeen"] (1916). Более поздние книги посвящены жизни в американской глубинке: "Великолепные Эмберсоны" ["The Magnificent Ambersons"] (1918; экранизирован в 1942) - Пулитцеровская премия [Pulitzer Prize] 1919; и "Элис Адамс" ["Alice Adams"] (1921; экранизирован в 1935) - Пулитцеровская премия 1922. Автор ряда пьес
